Amelia: Train Driver

Amelia followed an unlikely path to become a train driver and she’d have it no other way!

A degree in biological science led to a job in natural resource management and working with farmers and community groups…this career path gave Amelia an introduction to agriculture and working with machinery.

It was after making friends with other train drivers, that Amelia considered putting her skills to use through a career in rail. Initially she was unable to find work in her hometown of Perth and moved across to Sydney to chase her dream.

She became a trainee, working first as a second person before qualifying as a driver. “Enfield was a great place to start my career and I worked with a range of passionate and driven people as well as gained experience with different rolling stock and products.”

Amelia enjoys the hands-on nature of her work and working with a variety of colleagues. “I find that it is always a challenge, and you’re always learning something new in rail which allows me to constantly develop new skills.”

Working in an operational role, Amelia emphasises the important role safety plays in being able to deliver what matters. “It is so important to cross check everything and be alert in your surroundings, because you can just miss one thing, one signal and then potentially that could become a major incident.”

I am proud to be a part of the future of the rail industry and I can’t wait to see what the implementation of new technology will bring to enhance our long-term sustainability. In particular I am excited to drive the new fuel-efficient locomotives when they come into service from 2023.

Passionate about the environment, Amelia believes hauling large volumes of goods and commodities over large distances by rail helps to reduce vehicle emissions relative to road transportation alternatives. “I am proud to be a part of the future of the rail industry and I can’t wait to see what the implementation of new technology will bring to enhance our long-term sustainability. In particular I am excited to drive the new fuel-efficient locomotives when they come into service from 2023.”

Reflecting how the values of Pacific National resonate with her and align with her own values, Amelia is committed to being curious and practicing gratitude. “All my background led me to where I am today, and I am grateful for the opportunities within Pacific National to learn and grow as an employee.”
