Recruitment Process

A step-by-step guide to the recruitment process is described below.

Application submitted and advertising finished
2-4 weeks

Once you have submitted your application take note of the closing date listed on the advertisement. You will receive an initial email acknowledging your response to your application and in turn we will make contact with you within five days of receiving your application. 

Application reviewed against selection criteria
2-4 days

Your resume is assessed by one of our Careers consultants against the skill and experiences required for the position.

You will be contacted via the phone by a Careers team consultant to proceed further in the recruitment process or be advised that you were unsuccessful via email.

Phone Screen Interview
1-2 days

We will make contact with you via the phone to discuss the position's requirement or position requirements and will evaluate your match to the role brief and our organisational culture. This is typically a 15 minute conversation with a Careers consultant.

At the conclusion of your phone interview we will give you feedback on whether you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Careers team consultant interview
1-5 days

Many of our positions require an in depth interview with a Careers team consultant with preference for a face to face meeting in our offices. If this is not possible interviews are conducted over the phone. Interviews typically take up to an hour to complete.

The interview process will consist of behavioural based questions based on your previous work experience, situations you have been in and your general cultural fit for our business.

At the conclusion of your interview we will give you feedback on whether you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process. 

Hiring Manager Interview
2-4 days

The formal interview process with a Hiring Manager may include up to two interviews. On occasion a HR representative or the Careers team consultant may also attend the interview.

At the conclusion of your interview we will give you feedback on whether you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process. 

Background Checking
1-7 days

If you are the preferred candidate for the position we will undertake a range of checks dependant on the specific requirements of the position. These include reference checks, police checks, psychometric testing and medicals.

You will be asked to provide:

Rights to Work in Australia

In order to gain employment with Pacific National, Patrick or Bulk and Automted Ports Services (BAPS) we require you to provide confirmation that you have the right to work in Australia. Normally this requires your provision of a Passport or an Australian original Birth Certificate. You will be required to provide an original copy or your “Rights to Work” at the interview where we will take a colour photo copy and maintain this record on our system.

References

We require you to provide a minimum of two referees who can comment on your performance in your past positions. Preference is for contact details of your current and recent direct managers.

Medical Check

You may be required to undertake a medical check as part of the recruitment process. The Careers team will be in contact with you to make arrangements for you to attend a medical centre with every effort to locate one close to your place of residence. There are several different types of medicals dependant on the particular position you are being considered for. In general the medical check process is completed in an hour. 

Drug and Alcohol testing is a standard component of the medical test for all positions .

All medical results are kept confidential with the results of your tests being provided to you verbally by the Careers team consultant managing your recruitment process.

Functional Testing (Currently limited to Trainee Locomotive Driver positions in the Mackay region)

During your medical test you will be required to undertake a range of exercises that simulates the physical activities that you will encounter in your position.

Driving History Checks 

As part of the recruitment process you will be required to provide a copy of your current Driving record obtained from your state based road traffic authority. We set a high standard in the requirement of  a clean driving record for our employees and have an assessment benchmark of no greater than six demerit points over the past five years to be considered for a position with us.

Police Checks

A police check provides us information about any past or current criminal conviction or actions that you may have been involved with. We will assess all results from this process against the requirements for the position during our assessment process.

Given your consent a Careers team representative will undertake a police check with the results usually obtained in 48 hours. We will inform you of the result when it is obtained.

Psychometric Testing

Psychometric testing provides us a greater insight into whether your abilities and personality meet the requirements of the position, and assist us in determining if you will be a good ‘fit’ for the company. The tests can take between 1 and 3 hours dependant on the specific tests with results provided within 48 hours.

A Careers team consultant will make arrangements for you to gain contact with our Psychological testing provider who will make all required arrangements with you. After completion of the test we will provide you feedback on the results.

Qualifications and Tickets

For many of the positions we require you to have achieved a particular qualification (Accounting Degree) or certification (Crane drivers certificate). You will be required to provide an original copy or your qualification or ticket at the interview where we will take a colour photo copy and maintain this record on our system.

Offer Of Employment
1-2 days

If your background checking has been completed successfully and you are the selected candidate for the position, your Careers consultant will verbally discuss the potential offer with you to confirm your desire to progress to formal offer. It is important to note that only the provision and return of our formal employment contract documentation constitutes an offer to you.
